Portugal’s Seasons: Weather, Festivals, and Activities
Spring in Portugal (March to May)
Spring is a time of renewal and festivity in Portugal. After the winter rains, the countryside becomes green and fertile, vineyards begin to grow, and cities feel refreshed and lively. Temperatures are mild, making this season ideal for sightseeing, walking tours, and exploring historic towns without the intensity of summer heat.
Weather: In March, daytime temperatures typically sit between 15 and 20°C, rising to around 20–25°C by May. Evenings can still be cool, especially inland, but overall conditions are comfortable and pleasant for travel. Rainfall decreases steadily throughout spring, with March still seeing occasional showers and April and May becoming increasingly dry. While brief rain is possible, it is rarely persistent. Just make sure to pack an umbrella in case!
Seasonal Highlights: If you’re interested in local culture, spring is an excellent time to visit Portugal. Easter celebrations are particularly important, especially in historic cities such as Braga, where you can witness traditional Semana Santa processions. Across the country, churches host ceremonies and local festivities. This is also your chance to savour folar, a traditional bread served at Easter!
In May, pilgrims make their way to Fatima to commemorate the apparition of the Virgin Mary to young shepherds over a hundred years ago, while in Coimbra and Porto, students celebrate graduation with the Burning of the Ribbons and week-long events and activities.

Summer in Portugal (June to August)
Summer in Portugal is defined by sunshine, long days, and an energetic atmosphere. July and August bring higher temperatures and an influx of visitors, particularly to coastal destinations and major cities. While summer is undoubtedly popular for beach holidays, the heat and crowds may be less than ideal for travellers who want to explore multiple regions and enjoy a slower pace.
Weather: June is warm without being extreme, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 22 to 26°C along the coast, while being slightly warmer inland. Rainfall in June is minimal, and conditions are generally dry and stable. July and August are the hottest months, with inland regions reaching up to 30°C, with coastal areas remaining cooler due to Atlantic breezes.
Seasonal Highlights: In Lisbon, the Festas de Santo António take place throughout June, filling neighbourhoods with music, dancing, street decorations, and the scent of grilled sardines. In Porto, São João is celebrated later in the month with lively street parties, fireworks over the river, and the release of lanterns. These festivals are unmissable for anyone who wants to experience local Portuguese culture at its finest!

Autumn in Portugal (September to November)
Autumn is widely regarded as one of the best times to visit Portugal, particularly September and October. The summer crowds begin to fade, but temperatures remain warm and inviting. September also marks the harvest season, a truly joyous experience for travellers and foodies in particular.
Weather: In September, average daytime temperatures are between 24 and 30°C, while October cools slightly to a comfortable 18–23°C. The sea retains its summer warmth well into September, meaning you can still enjoy a day at the coast without the throngs of beachgoers.
Rainfall begins to increase gradually in autumn, but September is still relatively dry, and October usually sees only intermittent showers rather than prolonged rain. This is an excellent time for sightseeing, hiking, and multi-day trips.
Seasonal Highlights: The high point of autumn is the harvest season. In September, you can experience the vindimas or grape harvest in the Douro Valley. Join in the grape picking or even stomping and immerse yourself in traditional winemaking practices. Music, food, and wine heighten the occasion and turn it into a true celebration.

Winter in Portugal (December to February)
While you may not experience a snow-white Portugal in winter, it’s still a magical time to visit. With cooler temperatures, you can expect a quieter atmosphere and more time spent at cafes, museums, and Christmas markets. You can even still enjoy the occasional beach walk!
Weather: Winter in Portugal is mild compared to much of Europe, but it is also the wettest season. Daytime temperatures typically range from 8 to 16°C, with cooler conditions in the north and inland areas. Southern regions, including the Algarve, remain relatively temperate, though evenings can be chilly. Rainfall is more frequent during winter, particularly from December through February. While snowfall is rare and largely confined to higher elevations, you can go skiing and snowboarding at Serra da Estrela!
Seasonal Highlights: December comes alive with Christmas markets across Portugal, the biggest being Wonderland Lisboa, hosted in Parque Eduardo VII. January and February are calm and quiet, ideal for travellers seeking cultural experiences and a more tranquil holiday.
