On Tour

Where does the tour start and end?
Your pick-up will be at your hotel on Day 1 of your tour. Hotels vary per departure.
Who will I meet on the tour?
Groups are small, intimate, and full of cultural curiosity. You can expect friendly explorers—solo travelers, couples, friends—who share a love for real connection and unforgettable moments.
Are the activities suitable for everyone?

Our adventure activities are flexible, with expert guides who adapt each experience to your abilities and give you complete freedom to participate as you choose. This is your tour of Portugal, so if any activity doesn’t appeal to you, feel free to take a break or explore independently—adventure travel is about venturing off the beaten track and embracing new experiences. To fully enjoy our tours, guests should be comfortable with moderate walking on cobblestone streets and uneven terrain. Portugal’s hilly landscape means you’ll encounter inclines in cities like Lisbon and Porto, as well as the rugged Douro Valley. Our tours are best suited for active explorers with a baseline level of mobility, and while we offer support for a gentler pace, the natural terrain means the tour is not wheelchair accessible.

Do we have free time during the trip?
We always try to keep the driving to a minimum and more time off the bus so that our guests have time to explore towns and villages. We design tour days with breathing room, whether it’s enjoying an ice-cream by the seafront in Cascais, lingering over lunch in Porto, or enjoying the quiet of the Douro Valley. And during these moments, your guide will provide locals’ tips, for pastries, viewpoints, or hidden gems.
Are airport transfers included?

Airport transfers are not included in the tour price. Our small-group tours are designed to give you the flexibility to choose your own flight times and routes. To make your journey to and from the tour as seamless as possible, we recommend planning your airport transfer in advance.Portugal’s main international airports, such as Lisbon (LIS) and Porto (OPO), are well-connected to the city centers. You’ll find several convenient transport options available, including taxis, rideshare services (like Uber), dedicated airport shuttle buses, and public transport (metro or train).

We will provide you with the exact start and end location for your tour in our welcome pack, giving you plenty of time to arrange your travel accordingly.

Do All Tours Always Follow The Exact Route?

Our small-group tours are carefully planned and generally follow the same, well-established route. We have designed our itineraries to showcase the best of Portugal, and we know you’ll love the journey we’ve laid out. However, on rare occasions, slight adjustments may be made for practical reasons, such as unexpected road closures, weather conditions, or to take advantage of a unique local opportunity. Any changes are always made with your best interests in mind, ensuring your trip remains safe, seamless, and full of incredible discoveries. It’s all part of the Overland spirit!

How many people will be on my Portugal tour?
Typically between 10 and 15, small enough to feel personal, large enough to stay vibrant and social. We prioritize a personalized and intimate experience by keeping our group sizes small. This allows us to offer dedicated attention to each guest. Our ultimate goal is to create unforgettable moments for our guests during their Overland Portugal tour.
Is this tour suitable for all ages and mobility levels?

Our tour is best suited to active, cognitively engaged explorers who are comfortable with moderate walking, cobblestone streets, and occasional steps or uneven terrain. Please be aware that Portugal is a very hilly country, and our tours often include walking in cities like Lisbon and Porto, as well as the beautiful but rugged landscapes of the Douro Valley. Unfortunately, the nature of the locations we visit means the tour is not wheelchair accessible. Most activities are low-impact, and we offer support for guests who prefer a gentler pace.

Age restrictions
The minimum age for all small group tours is 12 years old, with no age limit.
Money on your Portugal Tour

The official currency in Portugal is the Euro. You’ll find ATMs and banks readily accessible throughout your Overland Portugal journey. Your tour guide will ensure that there’s ample time for money withdrawal or currency exchange as required. While many shops and restaurants in Portugal accept debit and credit cards, we recommend keeping a modest amount of cash on hand, especially when visiting charming, locally-owned establishments and stores.

How much time do we spend on the road?

As little as possible. Journeys between each destination are relatively short so that we can spend as much time exploring and doing exciting adventure activities as possible. However, in order to get off the beaten track and start your Portugal tour we need to cover some ground to reach the North of Portugal and of course, return to Lisbon at the end of your tour.

What kind of vehicles do we use?

Our fleet of Overland vehicles features Mercedes Sprinter mini coaches renowned for their comfort. These smaller-sized coaches are perfectly suited for venturing off the typical tourist path, navigating through narrow country lanes, and accessing remote valleys and mountains. All our vehicles offer a peaceful and cozy ride, with spacious interiors equipped with modern conveniences like air conditioning and USB charging ports, ensuring a pleasant and well-equipped journey.

Can I apply a discount code after I’ve already made a booking?

Tour prices are confirmed at the time of booking. Once a reservation has been completed, we’re unfortunately unable to apply discount codes, promotions, or pricing adjustments retroactively. We recommend entering your discount code during checkout to ensure it’s successfully applied before finalizing your booking. If you’re unsure whether a promotion is valid, feel free to contact our team before completing your reservation.

For the tour bus, we would ask you to try to pack as lightly and mindfully as possible. The max dimensions we would suggest would be 76cm/48 cm OR 30 inches/19 inches (70L backpack) – this size suitcase would be considered a large size universally. No refund is due for services voluntarily not used after the tour has begun, subject always to applicable law. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes appropriate cancellation and curtailment cover.

Where permitted by applicable law, if the client is required to cancel because unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances beyond their reasonable control, including war, terrorism, civil unrest, a pandemic, government restrictions, border closures, natural disasters or major transport disruption directly prevent them from travelling, Overland Tours will provide a credit for the amounts paid toward a future tour. Any credit is subject to availability and the prices and terms and conditions applicable at the time of rebooking. The client will be responsible for any increase in the price of the replacement tour. Nothing in this paragraph affects any statutory rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded.

Do you offer single-room options?

We welcome groups of all sizes for our tailor-made tours, accommodating anywhere from solo travellers up to 15 passengers. Our pricing is tailored to your specific group size and tour preferences, provided on enquiry to ensure you receive the best value for your Portugal adventure.

Solo travellers are warmly welcomed, and while a single supplement typically applies to guarantee you the comfort of a private en-suite room, this cost is incorporated into your final personalised quote.

If you’re concerned about your group size or have questions about pricing, please don’t hesitate to contact us—we’re here to help you create your perfect Portugal experience.

What are booking fees & taxes?
A booking fee of €50 per person applies to all bookings, whether made online via phone or by email.

On Tour

Who will I meet on the tour?

On your tailor-made tour, you’ll be travelling exclusively with your own group, creating an intimate and personalised experience throughout your journey. However, you’ll have the pleasure of meeting your local Portuguese expert guide who will share their insider knowledge and passion for the country, as well as connect with many friendly local Portuguese people along the way.

From vineyard owners and artisans to restaurant hosts and fellow explorers at the sites you visit, you’ll have countless opportunities to make genuine connections and forge lasting friendships that will enrich your Portugal adventure!

Are the activities suitable for everyone?

With our tailor-made tours, you have the freedom to create your itinerary from scratch to match your dreams and interests. If there’s something on your bucket list that’s an absolute must-do, simply let us know and we’ll do our best to incorporate it into your personalised Portugal adventure, creating an experience that’s uniquely yours.

For tailor-made tours, airport transfers can be incorporated into your itinerary and quote. Simply speak to the team about your requirements, and we will build your dream tour around you!

Our tours are designed to give you the flexibility to choose your own flight times and routes. To make your journey to and from the tour as seamless as possible, we recommend planning your airport transfer in advance.

Portugal’s main international airports, such as Lisbon (LIS) and Porto (OPO), are well-connected to the city centres. Should you wish to take your own airport transfer, you’ll find several convenient transport options available, including taxis, rideshare services (like Uber), dedicated airport shuttle buses, and public transport (metro or train).

We will provide you with the exact start and end location for your tour in our welcome pack, giving you plenty of time to arrange your travel accordingly.

Do All Tours Always Follow The Exact Route?

Our tours are carefully planned and will follow the itinerary that we have created together. We have designed your itinerary to showcase the best of Portugal, and we know you’ll love the journey we’ve laid out.

Tailor-made tours are bespoke to you. With these tours, your group will have the luxury of having your personal English-speaking guide show you the highlights and the hidden gems of Portugal.

That said, we prioritise a personalised and intimate experience by keeping our group sizes small. Tailor-made tours can range in size from 1 to 15 people.

Accommodation And Luggage

What kind of accommodation can we expect during our tour of Portugal?

With tailor-made tours, we craft your journey from start to finish and everything in between. This includes all accommodations on tour. If there is a particular type of stay you want to include, we will do our best to accommodate your request.

We typically offer stays in 4-star hotels in most locations, chosen to ensure both comfort and style. These may include charming, locally owned boutique hotels or rural quintas, all carefully vetted for comfort & character. En suite rooms are standard, and we personally inspect each property to ensure they meet our quality expectations.

Are groups accommodated in the same venue on your small group tours?

We always do our best to accommodate guests in the same venue whenever possible. However, there may be occasions where this isn’t feasible due to availability.

In such cases, we make sure that all group members are placed in nearby accommodations, and we work with a selection of trusted partner properties to ensure a consistent and comfortable experience. These partners are carefully chosen and closely aligned with our standards, so you can rest assured that the quality of your stay remains our top priority.

Is there a separate bathroom during our overnight accommodations?
All accommodations have ensuite facilities.
Is smoking allowed in vehicles and accommodation?

Smoking is not permitted in any of our tour vehicles. This is in line with Portuguese law, which prohibits smoking in all enclosed public spaces and public transport.

Regarding accommodation, all hotels and guesthouses we use have strict non-smoking policies for indoor areas, including all guest rooms. Many establishments do, however, have designated outdoor smoking areas. We kindly ask that you respect these rules to ensure the comfort and health of all guests.

During your Portugal tour, we will have plenty of breaks where you can light up a cigarette.

Are there luggage restrictions on tour?

Packing for a trip is never easy and we fully understand that you want to bring as much as possible on your tour of Portugal. For the tour bus, we would ask you to try to pack as lightly and mindfully as possible.

The max dimensions we would suggest would be 76cm/48 cm OR 30 inches/19 inches (70L backpack) – this size suitcase would be considered a large size universally. We just want to ensure all guests can fit their luggage on the bus comfortably!

We also suggest packing a rucksack/backpack for day-to-day necessities while on tour.

Laundry

We understand the challenges of packing for a trip, and because we do have some luggage restrictions, we recognise that guests might need to do laundry during the tour.

Each tour will provide an opportunity for laundry, and to learn more about the specific timing, please get in touch with our exceptional guest support team. They will be delighted to provide you with all the necessary information.

What should I pack for my trip to Portugal?

We recommend packing light, as we will be moving between locations but there are a few essentials:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Light rain jacket
  • Camera
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Sun Hat
  • Most importantly; Don’t forget sunscreen!

Good to Know

Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory in Portugal, but it is a welcome way to show your appreciation for excellent service. For restaurant meals, a tip of 5-10% is a thoughtful gesture for good service. In cafes and bars, it is common practice to simply round up the bill.
Gratuities on Tour
If you feel your tour guide and driver have provided you with a wonderful experience, a gratuity is a meaningful way to thank them for their passion and hard work. As a general guideline, a gratuity of €150 per day is an appropriate amount to share between your guide and driver. We kindly ask that you provide this directly to them at the end of the tour.
Gadgets, Phones & Electrical Stuff

We understand that your favourite gadgets are essential during your holidays. Throughout the tour, you’ll need to keep your phone, camera, and other electronic devices charged.

The standard voltage in Portugal is 230V, and the frequency is 50Hz. Portugal uses the Type C and F plug with two round pins. If you are travelling from outside of Europe, you will need a voltage converter and a plug adapter to use your electronic devices. You can easily purchase these from an electronics store or online before your trip. You can also conveniently charge your phone in the vehicle if you bring your USB connection with you.

Do passengers move their own luggage?
Yes, our clients do need to move their own luggage; however, just give the tour guide a shout if you need a hand.
